**Doge, the famous meme dog, is a female [Shiba Inu](https://dogtime.com/dog-breeds/shiba-inu). Her name is Kabosu, and she’s from Japan.**

In case you are wondering about Doge’s name—Kabosu is a type of Japanese citrus fruit.

Sato, a volunteer at the shelter where Kabosu was adopted from, said this about her name:

> “Her face is very round, just like kabosu [fruit]. I thought the name was perfect, so I kept it.”
